Can I use a general cleaner to prep the surface?
No, we do not recommend using general household cleaners for surface preparation before applying adhesive hooks or mounting tapes.
Isopropyl alcohol is the most effective cleaner for prepping surfaces as it quickly removes dirt, oils, and grease without leaving residue. These contaminants can weaken the bond between the adhesive and surface. The alcohol evaporates rapidly, ensuring the surface is dry and ready for adhesion.
Why Not Use Methylated Spirits?
Methylated spirits may seem like a suitable option, but we advise against using it for cleaning surfaces before applying adhesive products. It contains oils that can interfere with the adhesive’s ability to form a strong bond, making it unsuitable for preparing walls or other surfaces.
Suitable Cleaner:
Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) – Removes oils, dirt, and grime without leaving residue.
Unsuitable Cleaners:
Dish soap – Leaves behind oils and residues that interfere with bonding.
All-purpose cleaners – May contain surfactants or oils that prevent a strong bond.
Glass cleaner – Some formulas include oils or fragrances that affect adhesion.
Windex or ammonia-based cleaners – Leave traces of chemicals that interfere with the bond.
Spray cleaners with wax or polish – Often leave a thin film that hinders proper adhesion.
Remember: Drying Time is Crucial
After cleaning, always ensure that the surface is completely dry before applying adhesive products. Excess moisture can weaken the bond and prevent the adhesive from curing properly. Allow enough time for the surface to dry fully, especially if you're cleaning with any liquid-based solutions.
