Why Do I Have To Support The Mounting Tape After Applying It?

Modified on Fri, 22 Aug at 8:52 AM

Supporting the item after applying mounting tape is crucial to ensure the adhesive fully bonds and reaches its maximum strength. This support is especially important for the first 24–72 hours following installation. Here's why:

Curing Time for Maximum Strength

Most double-sided mounting tapes use pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), which require time to fully cure and bond. While the tape might feel firm immediately, it can take up to 72 hours to achieve its maximum bond strength. During this time, the adhesive settles into the microscopic pores of the surface and solidifies, forming a stronger hold.

Preventing Premature Stress

If the item is placed under weight or stress before the adhesive has fully bonded, the bond may weaken or fail. By supporting the item - using props, tape, or temporary brackets - you ensure the adhesive bond remains intact, preventing any premature stress or downward pull that could interfere with proper curing.

Environmental Factors

Temperature, humidity, and surface cleanliness can all impact the bonding process. The 72-hour waiting period accounts for these environmental variables, giving the tape the best chance to achieve a strong, long-lasting bond under real-world conditions.
